Youth Classes
Winter/Spring 2012
Carnaval Project
Fridays 2:15 - 3:15PM,
12 week session 1/13 - 4/30
Classes start this week!
Join the Celebration!
In
this fun class, students will create their own themed celebration in
the style of the Caribbean festival, Carnaval.
Carnaval
Project -a multidisciplinary, cultural arts, celebration.
Participants
will be introduced to the different traditions used, and many aspects
of the act of celebrating. The festival of Carnaval will be our
inspiration, as we learn about folkloric characters and invent some
of our own. Students will experience the process of collaborating,
as they form their own theme, create their costumes, compose their
rhythms, and choreograph their dances. As the group evaluates one
another’s input, effective communication techniques will be
practiced, building valuable life skills.
Throughout
the semester, we'll discuss the influence these festivals had on the
cultures of our ancestors and in bringing communities together.
Students will taste a little folkloric drumming and dancing, hear
blurbs, view photos, and short video clips to gain a glimpse of the
rich cultural history behind Carnaval. By participating in the
creation of their own celebration, they’ll develop an understanding
of the importance of working towards future events, as a way of
generating excitement and enthusiasm for daily life. The course will
end with a theatrical presentation to share with the Academic Antics
community.
This
semester will build on the class from last semester, but is open to
new students as well.
Class is for students 3rd grade and older
